 UN, C'River Govt Partner to Support Refugees, Commit To Food Security And Self-Sufficiency

The United Nations (UN) has announced its partnership with the Cross River State Government to provide 500 hectares of land for agricultural activities in Kajuk Village of Ogoja Local Government Area, expressing deep commitment to food security and self-sufficiency

Speaking during a visit to state Commissioner for Wealth Creation, Hon. Patrick Egbede, the country Director for UNCHR, Confidence Ndoma emphasized that the initiative aims to support refugees in the region by providing opportunities for sustainable livelihoods,  enabling them to engage in farming and agricultural activities, and promoting food security and self-sufficiency


He revealed that the allocated land will be used for crop cultivation, livestock production, and other agricultural purposes, including the planting of cassava, rice, tomatoes, okra, pepper, and groundnuts.

Speaking at different Internals, the Government representatives, such as Hon. Patrick Egbede, Commissioner for Wealth Creation, Dr. Inyang Asibong, special Adviser to the governor on Gender and Project Focal Person, Surv. Patrick Bassey,Surveyor General of the state and Hon Sarah Ikpali SA Women Mobilization North expressed their commitment to supporting the initiative, recognizing the importance of economic empowerment for refugees, particularly in agriculture.

They noted that the partnership between the UN and the Cross River State Government will further demonstrate a collective effort towards addressing the needs of refugees in the region as well as promote sustainable development.

They expressed optimism that the project, which is expected to commence later this year, will bring about several benefits including, enhancing food security for refugees, economic empowerment through agricultural activities, Improved livelihoods for refugees and promotion of sustainable development in the region

The pledged the Cross River State Government's support in ensurung the project's successful implementation.
