 Reps Committee Urges Multinational Companies To Imbibe Practices That Prioritize Environmental Stewardship, Community Well-being The House of Representatives Committee on Public Petitions has urged multinational companies operating in the country to work towards sustainable practices that prioritize environmental stewardship and community well-being.  The chairman, Rt. Hon. Mike Etaba, made this call when he led members of the committee on a two-day assessment visit to Rivers State to investigate the activities of multinational companies operating in the Trans Amadi Industrial Layout, Port Harcourt, following a petition by Bridge the Gap Initiative in Education and Health in Nigeria.  CSOs Resume Fight Against Massive Deforestation, Illegal Mining in C'River   Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in Cross River State are joining forces to combat the alarming rates of deforestation and illegal mining plaguing the state, threatening its rich biodiversity and the livelihoods of local communities. The Cross River Tropical Rainforest, once hailed as the richest cover in West Africa, has suffered extensive degradation over the past decades, with Nigeria losing an estimated 400,000 hectares of forest annually. Recent data indicates that Cross River State has been particularly hard-hit, losing significant portions of its forest cover to illegal logging, unsustainable agricultural practices, urban expansion, and infrastructure development.
