WTO: US Under Pressure To Support Okonjo-Iweala As Council Meet For Final Decisions The United States (US) has expressed its disappointment over the appointment of Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Nigeria’s candidate for the director-general of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), despite her widely gained support. Okonjo-Iweala won the popular vote by a wide margin, with the expectation of an announcement after a WTO meeting in Geneva. She was reported to have won the support of 106 of all 164 member countries of the WTO, many of which were from Africa and Europe. Around 3pm, the heads of delegation of the WTO met, but they didn’t reach an agreement It was learnt that after the meeting that the delay was caused by the US refusal to support the candidature of Okonjo-Iweala, thereby protracting the process.
