Recent research has shown that,on a daily basis, about 30 football field size of forests are being hewn down by exploiters, ostensibly for percuniary reasons.
Put in proper perspective, the world is losing its forests and forest related resources at an alarming and unsustainable rate.
Boki Local Government Area of Cross River state, Nigeria,, fortunately (or unfortunately) is home to one of the few remaining pristine forests in the world.
But(rather unfortunately) recent investigation has shown that this wonderful gift from nature that holds multiple social and economic benefits to its inhabitants,as well as the entire Cross Riverians and the world, which is home to some of the most unique and exotic flora and fauna ever seen, has been under the threat of extinction through the unsustainable exploitation by a few forest buccaneers in cahoots with their local accomplices.
Sadly, this wonderful gift, which has played a vital role in the fight against climate change through its carbon sequestration,is on the verge of annihilation through the incessant, unreasonable and unsustainable practice by these exploiters, and almost every community which lies contiguous to the forest is affected.
Gradually, the entire Boki nation is being deprived of its forest cover through such illegal activities, and those involved in the lumbering and logging activities seem oblivious or even justified in their actions, citing immediate paltry monetary gain as adequate justification.
This article does not seek to vilify or indict anyone in particular, but to raise awareness to, and put on records at this period in our civilization, the detrimental consequences of this destructive practices of forest depletion.
I am therefore calling on all concerned to take the necessary, concerted action towards stopping the further depletion of our pristine forest through lumbering activities.
Let relevant legislation be put in place by the requisite authorities to ensure the enforcement of action against such practices like logging, lumbering and timber exploitation.
Lastly, I am also in favour of an outright ban on exploitation of forest in the entire Boki Local government area and by extension, Cross River State.
A stitch in time saves nine.
