 CROSS RIVER CONSUMER PROTECTION AGENCY TACKLES PLASTIC POLLUTION AS PART OF HER ACTIVITIES TO MARK THE WORLD CONSUMER RIGHTS DAY.


The Cross River Consumer Protection Agency has admonished Cross Riverians and the public to be extremely conscious of the products they consume from plastic packs, so as to ensure the safety of their health.


While speaking to the public at the watt market in Calabar, the Director General of the Agency, Prince Charles Ushie explained that the Consumer Rights Day is an annual event that holds on every 15th of March and observed globally


Prince Ushie advised the public to abstain from the consumption of products that are cooked or packed with heated plastics as he also condemned the use of tyres to roast meats for human consumption in slaughters.

 

The DG warned that the agency has a consumer violation court that arraigns consumer offenders and are subject to various fines and prison terms.

 

Ushie also spoke on the quarterly check his agency embarks on at the markets to eradicate fake, substandard and unwholesome products and enlighten the dealers on the need to sell safe and healthy consumables to the public. He advised traders to also check the products they buy from the producers and wholesalers to avoid loosing their money buying fake products that will be eradicated and destroyed by the Consumer Protection Agency when found in their shops, stating that the agency will not compromise to the sales of fake, substandard and expired consumables to the public

.


The Director General used the occasion to thank His Excellency, Sen. Prof Ben Ayade for the establishment of the Agency to protect the Consumer.


A member of the board of the agency, Hon. Ekara Ekawu, described one of the mandates of the agency to include public awareness education and strict checks on products that are been sold in the markets, as so many products placed on shelves for sale are expired and substandard, which most consuming public are ignorant of.


Hon. Ekawu advised the public to check both consumables and body application products before buying them as fraudulent dealers are ready to make profit at the risk of the consumer health and only strict observance for NAFDAC numbers, SON certification , Expiry dates and Batch numbers will certify safe products.

 Ekawu also advised the public to report to the Cross River Consumer Protection Agency office at Okoi Arikpo House, whenever they buy or come in contact with products that are suspected to be substandard as the agency is out to protect the consuming public from fraudulent sellers and producers.


Also speaking, the Special Assistant to the Governor on Consumer Protection, Ms Theresa Effiom Bassey urge the consumers to know and maintain their right in every services they pay for and appealed to the public to desist from the use of waterproofs in cooking moimoi for consumption.


The Special Assistant advised the public to ensure proper consumption culture to stay safe and healthy.
