House of Reps Summons EEDC and TCN Over Total Blackout In Parts Of Imo State

In a bid to address the longstanding issue of total blackout, extortion, and neglect in some parts of Imo state, particularly, in Mbaise, the House of Representatives, through its Committee on Public Petitions headed by Rt. Hon. Mike Etaba, has summoned the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) and the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).

The summon, which is in response to a petition filed by Barr. Malachy Nwaekpe and concerned Mbaise residents, highlighting the continuous lack of electricity supply and the unjust practice of issuing estimated bills by EEDC, is geared towards arresting the situation permanently and ensuring that the people of Imo state and indeed all Nigerians partake in the renewed agenda of the present administration led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

During the initial hearing on Thursday, 18th January, 2024, the committee chairman and member representing Obubra/Etung Federal Constituency, Rt Hon. Michael Etaba mandated the EEDC to restore power supply to Mbaise communities before the next hearing scheduled for 6th February, 2024 and to assuage for the  long period of blackout in the area.

Etaba assured that the House Committee on Public Petitions would remain steadfast in their quest for Justice, fairness, transparency, and accountability as well as reiterated commitment to facilitating dialogue between petitioners and respondents to finding a lasting solution to the challenges faced by Nigerians. He asserted that the upcoming hearing on the 6th of February, 2024, will provide an opportunity for further discussions on ending the cycle of total blackout and extortion in the area. The committee further emphasized the importance of addressing grievances promptly and ensuring that every citizen's voice is heard, promising to leave no stone unturned in ensuring Justice.

Meanwhile, on their part, the petitioners, along with other stakeholders from Mbaise, expressed their grievances regarding the uncompleted and abandoned transmission station in the area, which has exacerbated the issue of total blackout, as well as commended the Committee for their commitment to justice and fairness for all Nigerians.
