Public Petitions Committee Investigates Electricity Issues in Mbaise District

The House of Representatives Committee on Public Petitions on Friday 15th March, 2024 embarked on an investigative trip to Mbaise District in Imo State to address electricity supply concerns raised in a petition.

Led by Rt. Hon. Mike Etaba MHR, member representing Obubra/Etung Federal Constituency, the committee arrived at the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport on Friday in a two-day trip to conduct on-the-spot assessments in Mbaise and Ngor-Okpalla LGAs and was warmly received upon arrival with a cultural performance organized by the Greater Mbaise Association, showcasing the rich cultural heritage and great hospitality of Imo state. Special recognitions were given to Rev. Fr. Leo Eke and Barr. Malachy Nwaekpe for their contributions to the cause. Rt. Hon. Mike Etaba and Hon. Attorney Mathew Nwogu were also specially recognized for their commitment to ensuring fair hearing and representing the interests of their constituents.

The petition, presented by M. C. Chambers (Barr. Malachy Nwaekpe Esq.), highlights issues such as the abandonment of the Aboh Mbaise Transmission Station, perennial blackout, extortion through estimated billing, and neglect by relevant authorities. The committee engaged with both the petitioner and the respondents before deciding to visit Mbaise and Ngor-Okpalla for a firsthand investigation.

Key concerns raised in the petition include the completion of the Aboh Mbaise Transmission Station approved in 2009, cessation of extortion through estimated billing, and the need for upgraded infrastructure to meet the electricity demands of the growing population. Additionally, the petitioner emphasized the importance of metering every building to ensure fair billing and upgrading transformers to improve voltage supply

The Committee conducted thorough assessments in Ibeku, Okpofe, and Ihitte communities, paying homage to traditional rulers along the way. The visit continues on Saturday, 16th March, with further investigations planned in Owerri

In his remark, Etaba bolstered that the Public Petitions Committee is an accessible platform for citizens to have their voices heard and seek justice. He emphasized the importance of providing fair hearings and ensuring equity, fairness, and justice for all Nigerians.

The outcome of the Committee's visit and investigations will be crucial in addressing the challenges faced by the people of Mbaise District and by extension all Nigerians, improving the overall development of the country.
