Dr.Bassey Tom Peaceful Coexistence Agenda Recieves A Boost As Police Holfs Security Summiy

The peacefull coexistence agenda of the executive Chairman of Obubra Local Government Council, Hon Dr Bassey Agara Tom has received a boost as the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Obubra Division, M C Bright, yesterday September 22nd, 2020 held a security summit at the Council Hall with the theme 'Peaceful Coexistence, Maintenance of Law & Order as well as Crime Prevention. The DPO said the summit was at the instance of the Commissioner of police meant to gather first hand information directly from the people on how to coexist, maintain law and order and prevent crime.

Present at the summit were traditional rulers, opinion leaders, political leaders, women leaders, youths leaders etc. Among the three topics, Peaceful coexistence dominated the discussion as the people enumerated myriad causes of crises and public disturbances, and went forward to suggest possible solutions to them.

Some of the causes advanced in the summit were; Land ownership, Chieftaincy tussles, disrespect for rule of law,  disrespect for tradition and traditional rulers, cultism and lack of mutual respect among the people.

Others are traditional rulers in politics, lack of boldness and bravery amongst the chiefs, individual crimes becoming community issues etc.

Participants thanked the new DPO, M C Bright for having the initiative to introduce the security summit, saying that it was new to the people of Obubra. They called on the police to step up their game and be more professional in discharging their duties, and called on the government to increase police posts in the LGA, train and retrain the officers, provide mobility for them and give them the requisite assistance to be able to act professionally in fighting crime and maintaining peace and order. The Clan heads on their part expressed delight over the summit which they described as first of its kind, and pleaded  with the SA Peace and Security to appeal to the Chairman, Dr Bassey Agara Tom to call for a larger security Summit that will include all communities Chiefs in Obubra, leadership of the Youths and women etc, such that will be more encompassing.

Speaking on behalf of the Chairman of Council, the Special Adviser to the Chairman on Peace and Security, Hon King Omenyi underscored the Chairman's commitment to the achievement of his peaceful coexistence mantra urging the people to collaborate and give him the necessary support to make Obubra a peaceful place to live. He called on the Chiefs to take responsibility and be bold in taking decisions, such that would engender peace in their communities. The SA lauded the Ogada Chiefs for their quick response to the Chairman's call to show remorse and placate their neighbours for the wrong done to them.

Hon King Omenyi advised the Chiefs to be wary of the danger of communities shouldering individual's crime, adding that individuals should be allowed to face the law when ever they willfully commit crime. The SA further assured the Clan heads that arrangements were already on ground for such an encompassing summit, according to the rudiments of his agenda.

The DPO however thanked the people for coming and promised to sustain the summit where he will be meeting with them in different fora. He went further to promise that he will discuss the plight of Obubra people with the Commissioner, but charge the people to do their parts in supporting the police in their own capacity to enable them do their job effectively.
