Yala Chairman Not Suspended or Impeached -Media Team Clarifies

Reports circulating on social media that the Chairman of Yala Local Government Area, Hon. Dr. Fred Okem, has been impeached or suspended for three months have been dismissed as false and misleading.

In a statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the chairman,  Emmanuel Unah, the team described the reports as “baseless and mischievous,” stressing that Hon. Okem remains the duly elected and serving Chairman of Yala LGA.

According to the clarification, what transpired was a meeting convened by the Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Elvert Ayambem, with the Chairman of Yala LGA and Councillors in attendance. The Deputy Chief of Staff to the Governor was also present at the meeting.

Contrary to the allegations, no resolution of suspension or impeachment was passed. Instead, the meeting was aimed at reconciling differences between the Chairman and Councillors. It was agreed that both parties should maintain the status quo, sheath their swords, and work together in peace and harmony for the unity and progress of Yala.

The Speaker emphasized the need for cooperation and mutual respect, urging all sides to put the interest of the people first.

The statement therefore urged the public to disregard rumors of impeachment or suspension, describing them as distractions intended to create unnecessary tension.

“Hon. Dr. Fred Okem remains fully committed to serving the people of Yala and working with all stakeholders for the peace, unity, and development of the local government,” the statement concluded.
