CR-SEMA Extends SSDC-Sponsored Relief Distribution to Disaster Victims in Central Cross River
By David Asu
The Cross River State Emergency Management Agency (CR-SEMA) has extended the distribution of humanitarian relief materials donated by the South-South Development Commission (SSDC) to disaster-affected residents in the Central Senatorial District of the state.
The distribution, which took place on Thursday, November 5, 2026 at the SEMA Warehouse, covered Ikom, Obubra and Etung Local Government Areas, as part of efforts to ensure that the relief intervention reached residents affected by various disaster incidents across the state.
The Director General of CR-SEMA, Mr. Efa Nyong, supervised the distribution, handing over relief items to the Vice Chairmen of the respective local government areas, who also serve as Chairmen of their Local Emergency Management Committees (LEMCs), for onward distribution to identified disaster victims in their communities.
The exercise followed the formal presentation of a fire truck and humanitarian relief materials to the Cross River State Government by the SSDC, represented at the handover ceremony by the Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Dr. Peter Odey, on behalf of Governor Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu.
Speaking during the distribution, Nyong emphasised the importance of ensuring that the assistance provided by the Commission reached the intended beneficiaries, particularly households affected by fire outbreaks, flooding and other disasters.
He noted that the involvement of the Local Emergency Management Committees would help facilitate the distribution at the grassroots, given their knowledge of affected communities and the needs of disaster victims within their respective local government areas.
The Director General appreciated the SSDC for its intervention and reaffirmed the Agency's commitment to working with local emergency management structures to ensure that disaster-affected residents received the necessary support.
Receiving the items on behalf of their respective local governments, the Vice Chairmen expressed appreciation to the SSDC, the Cross River State Government and CR-SEMA for extending the intervention to their areas.
Further commenting on the distribution, the Vice Chairman of Obubra Local Government Area, Hon. Leonard Ogwa, thanked Governor Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu for his commitment to disaster management and for providing the necessary support to CR-SEMA to effectively discharge its responsibilities.
Also present at the exercise were the Vice Chairman of Etung Local Government Area, Hon. Innocent Assam Amba, and the Vice Chairman of Ikom Local Government Area, Hon. Maurice Ndoma, who received the relief materials on behalf of their respective councils and Local Emergency Management Committees.
