Cross River State Consumer Protection Agency Destroys And Burnt Fake, Substandard And Expired Consumables.


The Governor of Cross River state, Senator (Prof) Ben Ayade in his quest to safe guard the health and well being of Crossriverian and her Resident ordered the Cross River Consumer Protection Agency to evacuate their warehouse and destroy every fake, substandard and expired consumables they have recovered from the public space in the course of their operations..

The execise took place yesterday in Calabar where a lot fake, substandard and expired products such as cosmetics, soft drinks, food seasoning powders, bathing soaps, perfumes, can beer, red wines and spirits, snacks, toothpaste and many more was set ablaze.




Speaking during the event, where trader union executives and the general public were present, the Director General of the Agency, Prince Charles Ushie extolled the Governor Ayade for his vision on the health and safety of Crossriverians and her resident for establishing the agency in 2016. He maintained that the burning exercise will not only be carried out in Calabar but across all the local government area of the state.

Prince Ushie said his agency has just commenced operations for the year 2022 with special focus on food, building materials, electrical materials, lubricants, tyres, etc. He advised all producers, dealers and retailers to maintain the requisite standard of the Cross River consumer Protection Agency by quitting all illegalities and ensuring that the public are decently served in exchange for their money, revealing that the agency has a list of defaulters which have been sent to the judiciary for arraignment and every defaulter would face the full wrath of the law.


The. D G advised the public to carefully check for NAFDAC ,SON certification and expiry dates on products before buying them as only them can their health and safety be ensured, uttering that consumers are entitled to enjoy the worth of every services they pay for. While he admitted that his agency cannot destroy or burn the drugs ceased from pharmacies as a result of their chemical composition, saying they have written to NAFDAC for proper disposal which would be carried out by trained officials.




Ushie implored the public to co-operate with the agency by adequately giving them informations whenever they come across injurious products in the markets. He also cautioned the bakeries to maintain hygiene and use of personal protective equipments during production in their bakeries, also calling for updating of laboratories in the water factories for the production of healthy and safe water for human consumption.




Prince Charles hailed Sen Prof Ben Ayade for his innovative and pragmatic leadership that has intensively improved the economy of the state through his agro industrialization projects as well as empowering the youths for a blissful and progressive Cross River State to be attained, affirming his commitment and support to the visionary projects of the Governor Ayade while wishing him attainment of greater heights from the state to the National level to enable him inject same to the Nigerian economy.
