Owan Distributes Medical Equipment to Health Centre in Yala–Obubra

A former Chairman of the Obubra Local Government Council and internationally renowned cardiologist based in the United States, Prof. Theophilus Ekpong Owan, has donated vital medical equipment to the Health Centre in Yala–Obubra, Cross River State.

The medical expert, who personally visited the health facility, presented essential diagnostic tools including blood pressure monitors, blood sugar testing kits, and other basic medical gadgets aimed at improving primary healthcare delivery in the area.

While handing over the gadgets to the management, Prof. Owan explained that the donation was part of his commitment to giving back to his roots and strengthening grassroots healthcare services. He maintained that access to basic medical equipment at the primary healthcare level can significantly reduce preventable deaths as early detection of hypertension, diabetes, and other health conditions begins here.

“This gesture is my modest contribution to ensuring our people receive timely and quality medical attention.”

Also speaking, a Director with the Nigerian Television Authority and chairman of Yala-Obubra Community Association, (YOBUCA) Calabar Branch, Mr. Oba Hycent Ndoma, who drew Prof. Owan’s attention to the pressing needs of the health centre, commended the medical expert for responding swiftly and demonstrating genuine concern for community welfare. He noted that the donation would boost the operational efficiency of the facility and enhance access to quality healthcare for residents of Yala–Obubra and surrounding communities.

Reacting to the donation, the Head of Department of the clinic, Mrs. Dorothy Friday, expressed profound gratitude to Prof. Owan for the timely intervention, maintaining that the equipment would greatly enhance their diagnostic capacity and improve patient care. According to her, such a gesture testifies to the strong community spirit that abounds in Yala, assuring that the items would be put to judicious use.

Mrs. Friday, however, appealed to relevant authorities, illustrious sons and daughters of Yala and Obubra, and concerned individuals and groups, to further support the facility. She highlighted urgent needs including solar lighting to ensure constant power supply, ten hospital foams, ten bed sheets, ten pillows, ten pillowcases, delivery forceps of various types, and delivery couches. She emphasized that addressing these needs would significantly improve maternal and general healthcare services in the community.

On his part, the President-General of Yala Nkum Town Council, DSP Stephen Inaku, lauded Prof. Owan for his generosity and commitment to community development. He described the donation as a demonstration of purposeful leadership and urged other prominent sons and daughters of the area to emulate the gesture.

A major highlight of the visit was a free general health screening for everyone present, as well as a practical session on how to properly use the donated medical gadgets.

Among those present were the Media Aide to the Member representing Obubra/Etung Federal Constituency, Eriacy Confidence Oba; the Principal of Dr. Mathew Achigbe Memorial Secondary School, Mr. Adegoke Ademola; former councillorship aspirant, Mr. Eric Ogar; health workers; and other community stakeholders.
