Dr. Betta Chimaobim Edu represents a generation of Nigerian leaders whose careers have been defined by public service, compassion and a determination to improve the lives of ordinary citizens. A medical doctor and public servant, Dr. Edu has built an impressive record across healthcare, humanitarian affairs, poverty alleviation and women’s empowerment.

Her leadership journey includes serving as Director-General of the Cross River State Primary Healthcare Development Agency and later as Commissioner for Health in Cross River State. In those roles, she championed initiatives aimed at strengthening primary healthcare and improving access to essential health services. Her record also includes involvement in the Ayadecare health insurance scheme and reforms designed to make healthcare more accessible to low-income and vulnerable families.

A Voice for the Vulnerable

One of Dr. Edu’s most notable national assignments was her appointment as Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation in 2023. She entered the ministry at a time when millions of Nigerians were facing economic hardship, displacement, food insecurity and other humanitarian challenges.

As minister, she articulated an ambitious social-protection agenda focused on helping vulnerable Nigerians through programmes including Conditional Cash Transfers, the Government Enterprise and Empowerment Programme (GEEP), grants for vulnerable groups, school feeding and the Renewed Hope Shelter Programme. The ministry stated that the proposed Conditional Cash Transfer programme was designed to reach 15 million households, while GEEP was planned to support 1.5 million beneficiaries through loans for market women, traders and farmers.
