The people of Ikom,Cross River State have ordered the staff of Power Holding Company Of Nigeria(PHCN) to leave their land. One of the residents of Ikom, Mr Emmanuel Oddi, a native of Abi LGA told Coneri Magazine that PHCN has failed woefly in its responsibility to power the town. In his words:
'Ikom dey for darkness, we no de get light but at the end of the month,we go pay plenty bill. We say instead make NEPA go make we continue with fuel . We no need them again.Na generator we dey use,which kind thing.
Businesses and shops including parks and Hospitals in Ikom were shut down for the Protest which lasted for more than four hours.Motorcycle operators(Okada),drivers and other concerned individuals and organizations joined the residents in protesting round Ikom chanting'NEPA Must go' with placards of varied inscriptions.
According to sources, the protest has been initiated by the Local Government council led by the caretaker chairman due to the epileptic power supply in the area. One of the residents, Mr Favor Egbe revealed how he spends a huge sum every day on petrol because of blackout yet pays high electricity tarrif.
' Everyday I dey spend almost #2000 for fuel to pump water and other things yet we claim we have Nepa.I don't think it's good.'
Efforts to reach PHCN proved abortive as staff hide themselves for safety to escape the venom of the angry protesters.
