Commissioner For Humanitarian Affairs Commended For Her Proactive Approach In Handling The Case Of A Family Involved In Gas Incident


The Chief Medical Director of Peace Medical Centre, Calabar, Dr. Edet Attih and Ward 4 Youth Leader, Mr. Bassey B. Ekpenyong, on Tuesday November 28, 2023 paid a visit to the Cross River State Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Helen Isamoh-Egodo, to show their appreciation for her proactive approach in handling the case of a family involved in a gas incident. The family of four, including a husband, a pregnant wife and two children, had suffered from a gas explosion on August 22, 2023.


During the visit, Dr. Attih informed the commissioner that the victims had been discharged from the hospital, expressing his gratitude for her efforts and by extension, Senator Prince Bassey Otu's commitment to the 'People First' mantra. 


He also mentioned that the government had provided financial assistance of 500,000 Naira to the family, besides individual supports from the commissioners for Humanitarian, Health and others, noting that the total medical bill for the family amounted to 9.8 million Naira.


He appreciated the government for appointing a social worker to head the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and stated that her appointment was a perfect fit for the position.The medical director also disclosed that the wife, who is pregnant, is doing well and her pregnancy is progressing smoothly. 


On her part, the honourable commissioner for humanitarian Affairs and poverty alleviation warmly welcomed Dr. Attih and Mr. Ekpenyong, expressing her appreciation for their gratitude. She metaphorically referenced the biblical story of the ten lepers, where only one returned to express his gratitude, and praised the medical team for their excellent care and support.


She pledged the ministry's continuous collaboration with the medical center and social workers in providing timely and efficient assistance to those in need.
