Governor Otu Committed To Alleviating The Suffering Of Cross Riverians In The Wake Of Climate Change And Environmental Degradation - Humanitarian Affairs Commissioner


Yesterday, the Honourable Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Cross River State, Mrs Helen Egodo PhD, participated in the National Climate Action Stakeholders workshop on decarbonization and biodiversity for the Niger Delta region.

The two-day workshop organised by the Cross River State Government and the Federal Ministry of Environment in collaboration with the National Council for Climate Change and Stratus Consult Limited created a platform for knowledge-sharing, collaboration, and policy formulation to promote decarbonization and protect biodiversity in the region. It was unanimously acknowledged that as Niger Delta grapples with the effects of unchecked human activities and the resulting climate crisis, there is a compelling need to come together and formulate proactive measures to address these challenges, underscoring the need to integrate the all stakeholders in the formulation of climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies to enhance its effectiveness in safeguarding the well-being of the people. 

In the event, stakeholders highlighted, among other things, the significance of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs in alleviating the suffering of the people in the wake of climate change and environmental degradation.

Addressing journalists shortly after the event, the Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Dr. Helen Isamoh-Egodo, expressed the commitment of the Cross River State governor, Sen. Prince Bassey Otu, in tackling the adverse impacts of climate change. She emphasized the relevance of the ministry of Humanitarian Affairs in mitigating the suffering of the local communities affected by the changing climate and environmental degradation, bolstering that the ministry focuses on providing emergency relief, ensuring food security, and supporting vulnerable populations affected by natural disasters and environmental crises. 

She commended stakeholders at the workshop for recognising the need for resource sharing in mitigating climate change impacts and stressed the importance of local and international collaborations to achieve sustainable solutions.

 "By working closely with the Federal Ministry of Environment, the National Council of Climate Change, and other relevant partners, the ministry of Humanitarian Affairs can enhance its capacity to respond to the challenges faced by communities in the Niger Delta region"

Furthermore, the commissioner  emphasized the significance of understanding the nexus between climate change, biodiversity loss, and humanitarian crises. She reiterated the importance of adopting an interdisciplinary approach that integrates environmental conservation, livelihood development, and social protection measures to mitigate the suffering of vulnerable populations.

The event was well attended by stakeholders of the Niger Delta region, both in the public and private sector.
