'The reward for work well done is the opportunity to do more' - Jonas Edwards Salk
On a day like this, one would expect me to confine my writing to just pouring encomiums on the Amazon for her unprecedented Achievements since her triumphant entry into politics and within a limited opportunity. Well, the best way to eulogize this Amazon is to seize this opportunity to present a case for the emergence of a female Senator in the central Senatorial district come 2023 Elections.
In the Cross River political space, it is only the Central Senatorial District that has not produced a female federal paliamentarian. The North has produced a female House of Reps member and Senator in late Senator Rose Oko. The South has as well recognized and rewarded the efforts of women in Senator Florence Ita-Giwa. It is only fair for the people of Central to consider sending a woman to Abuja come 2023. At the moment, both the Senatorial seat and the offices of the three houses of Representatives are under the costurdy of the male folks. This is not only unfair but undermines the contributions of women to the society.
No doubt the political space of the Central Senatorial district of Cross River State is highly competitive and endowed with great women, who have distinguished themselves in their respective fields and have gone to contribute immensely to the socio-political evolution of the state. But often times, they are relegated to playing second fiddle, to answering first ladies and wives of Honourables. When critical decisions are to be taken, the women are muscled out of the process by the male dominated politics of the Central.
The women too have been reluctant in changing the status quo. Since politics, they say is the game of number, the women should by now have united themselves into a formidable force, liased with the youths who are also agitating for inclusion in governance and leverage on the strength of this alliance to produce a federal paliamentarian in the central. But sadly, the women have not been able to utilize the power resident in them.
Having made this significant point, I would like to ask a very pertinent question. Who, among the many women in the central Senatorial district has strategically positioned herself to assume this responsibility and with the requisite capacity to change the narrative?
Who?
Well, without wasting time, I wish to present to you, one woman who has carved a niche for herself in business and politics, the humanitarian Amazon of Obubra, the business tycoon of Obubra/Etung and the political climate changer of the Central Senatorial District. Hon. Blessing Egbara. The name Blessing Egbara rings a bell to many and has become synanymous with humanitarian services, purposeful leadership, motherly disposition and a lifestyle free from hypocrisy and pride in the Cross River political space. Apart from the fact that, Blessing Egbara is the honourable Commissioner for Humanity and Social Welfare who has meticulouly delivered the welfare packages of the present administration, the Amazon has proven herself willing and ready to perfectly assume this great responsibility. Going by her antecedents even before assuming responsibility as Commissioner, Blessing Egbara has developed the lifestyle for putting smiles on people's faces and helping them realize their full potentialities. Like Jonas Edwards Salk succinctly puts it, "the reward for work well done is the opportunity to do more", Blessing Egbara has done so well enough to be saddled with more responsibilities and in this case, to be sent to Abuja to continue her good works.
Blessing Egbara has proven in several stakes her willingness, readiness and capacity to serve the people of Central. For instance, in 2015, Blessing was a leading contestant for Obubra/ Etung Federal Constituency and in 2019 she made history as the only female contestant for the central Senatorial district Elections. But she wasn't considered in all of these attempts perhaps due to the aforementioned factor.
As we approach 2023 Senatorial Election, it will be victory for the women community and indeed the people of the Central Senatorial District if all parties consider fielding female candidates to correcting the long standing gender disparity in the political climate of central and most importantly, considering Blessing Egbara for such a historical move.
Happy Birthday to the political Amazon of Central
