Cross River Central 2023: Obubra Clamors For Senate, Says It's The Turn of the Local Govt To Produce The Next Senator

Cross River Central 2023: Obubra Clamors For Senate, Says It's The Turn of the Local Govt To Produce The Next Senator

The trajectory Political atmosphere behoofing  us at the moment, requires that we begin to make Political statements as it concerns what comes to us now and later. But before I continue, permit to reread rhetorically, the history of Obubra; as it's in Politics, heritage and practical beliefs, quadrant cultures and traditions in similarities.

Obubra is a Local Government Area (LGA) of Cross River State, Nigeria. Its headquarters are in the town of Obubra, which is home to the Ibrahim Babangida College of Agriculture and

the National Youth Service Corps, Cross River State Orientation Camp.

The word Obubra is derived from 'Ubibira, Ubira or Obira', the name of Obubra main village at the bank of the Cross river., where most of our colonial masters settled before spreading across. Obubra however, was used to represent an administrative unit under the British colonial empire in the late 19th century. The exact history of the signed treaties of Community heads and the representatives of the British empire are in antiquity not withstanding.

Obubra was created as a district in 1902. It covered areas bounded by Abakaliki and Ikom to the North, and Afikpo and Calabar to the South. This meant that its jurisdiction extended from parts of present day Biase and Akamkpa local government areas through Abi, Yakurr and Etung to parts of Ikom and Ogoja local government areas. Obubra has 98 villages some of which include; Apiapum, Iyamoyong, Ohana, Ochon, Isabang, Ovunom, Ofodua, Ofat, Ababene, Oderegha, etc. I am sure you are surprise!

Obubra consist of a mono-cultural groups of people of Mbembe decent. We have the Adun, the Okums, Afumbonghas and the Osopongs, each clan, having their cultural heritage but with similar peculiarities. Analytically speaking, Obubra shares the national characteristics of being a multi-ethnic or plural society.

Obubra as an LGA, had before now, the best Political potentials until later. Were the dead of one man and others who follow thereafter, ridiculed our political prowess to a point where others refer to us as "Insignificant, trifling and inconsequential Majority", but with our regenerated capacities, we are nothingless, one of the most equipped LGA; intellectually, productively and otherwise in the political scene of Cross River State.

The People's Democratic Party, some Cross Riverians are laying ownership to, today, was founded by a few persons, with an Obubra son inclusive, and to also let you know, we were the first who dared to transposed the State Political status quo in 2003. This is a simple history you must crave for the knowledge. Obubra as a LGA, was first to have a member in the Cross River State House of Assembly from the opposition Party. Who also is the first interim State Chairman of the present All Progressives Congress.

Without reference to the above, Obubra as a nation has suffered tremendously in terms of equitable share in the political gains of Cross River State. The highest we have got was a half term deputy governor and now Federal house of Representatives, twice, for which I believe is far less, looking at our contributions to democracy in Cross River State Since 1999.

A few years back before 2019 General elections, we plunged into an ambition to lead the APC here in the State, but we encountered a punitive unpremeditated fighting and later lost a man of straw to the cold hands of death. The party is yet to commemorate or commiserate, and even compensated us as it should be done; We weren't even given a chance to top off the tenure afterall.

Moving forward, the party's congresses are just before us, and as the authorities may want to, please, Obubra should be considered appropriately in the State party structure.

Now gazing ahead, we have been waiting patiently overtime, and I believe that the Senatorial seat for Obubra in 2023, won't be wide off the mark. We have worked for others, I think it's time for others to work for us. The Senatorial seat has whizzed through Boki to Ikom and now Etung in the last 21 years. It's going to be typically unwelcome and a freak, if Obubra doesn't play host this time.

In the words of a former Distinguished senator from Central, sometimes in 2015. He said and I quote, "I would have been happy to relinquish power now, if it was going to Obubra". He said this but he has no such powers to do so, because Power is taken and not given. But in 2023, Obubra has all within us to take the Senate seat, and I want to plead with our brothers to support us on this.

I share in the sentiments that Senate shouldn't leap over Obubra to Yakurr or Abi after exiting Etung. We are not debilitated to allow that happen. Our party State chairmanship won't come to us, Governorship and even Deputy isn't coming to us either, so Senate should be for us. 2023 is for Obubra. We are fit for the red chambers. Support Obubra for Senate 2023.

Trying to evaluate how lofty political offices had gone within the Central Senatorial District, you will definitely sympathize with the Obubra. Abi and Yakurr had produced governors respectively, Boki and Ikom did Senate, and Etung are currently occupying senate for the second term. It's fitting for Obubra to also get Senate.

I therefore urge proficient sons and daughters of Obubra extraction, to come out lets do a dance to the "Red Chambers". It's our time. No better time than now. "A new Obubra is Possible".

Justin Obongha MOM

Proudly For Obubra 4 Senate 2023.
