The Bassey Tom Model Of Leadership: The Way To Go By Eriacy Confidence Oba
Wilfred Peterson said" The leader sees things through the eyes of his followers. He puts himself in their shoes and helps to make their dreams come true. He doesn't say,' Get going' Instead he says' Let's go' and leads the way. He doesn't walk behind with a whip; he is out in front with a banner"
Contrary to what some leaders would do by simply passing instructions to followers and expecting them to deliver excellently without showing them the way, Dr. Bassey Tom, the Executive Chairman of Obubra LGA, has through his involvement in today's sanitation exercise at the council proven his model of leadership by being in front with the banner, instead of walking behind with a whip. Believe me that words are cheap but actions are not, calling oneself a leader is easy but leading by example is not. It takes great courage, humility and a mind for the people, to in spite of one's office, join followers in doing what he or she ask them to do. A lot of leaders won't do it. But he chose this model of leadership and I urge all to emulate. Leading by example is the only thing that separates leaders from office holders as not all office holders are true leaders. Don't forget that no one is a leader until he is doing what he wants others to do.
In one of my articles tittled "The Kind Of Leader Obubra LGA Needs In 2020", published during the electioneering process, I advocated the need for us to produce a leader that would not only be visionary and accessible but that would also be humble enough to work with his followers as equals on any project as well as offer himself as a kind of laboratory or workshop for practice of leadership by others. It is worthwhile to know that
Dr Bassey Tom fits perfectly into this. Since inauguration, Dr Bassey Tom has shown practical experience of leadership and readiness to take Obubra out of the woods. His unwavering commitment to the restorstion of peace as well as deliberate laundry of the battered image of the LGA even with meagre resources at disposal within few weeks in office is an indicator of a visionary leadership.
I believe it would only be wise to support his model of leadership by keying into his policies and programmes to enable us realize the new Obubra project.
This article is a response to the many calls, comments and DMs I have received since yesterday as a result of posting and sharing the information about Obubra LG council embarking on sanitation today, with the chairman leading the way. Many have asked if there are no labourers employed to keep the council clean and why a chairman should be involved in such an exercise.
Well, Abraham Schweitzer once said" The three ways to lead people are:..by example...by example...and by example"
Whether there are labourers or not, "Leadership is not by position or title. It's action and example" Cory Booker would say.
For me, Obubra is at the verge of realising her greatness if and only if we can lend our support. And for us to achieve that greatness, we must support the chairman, councillors and all our leaders to succeed.
Let's think Obubra.
