Humanitarian Commissioner, Helen Egodo, Writes Cross Riverians as Severe Flooding Expected in Bakassi, Obubra, Ikom, Other LGAs



The Cross River Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Dr. Helen Egodo, has issued a warning regarding the severe weather and flooding expected in several parts of the State, including Bakassi, Obubra and Ikom Local Government Areas. Other Local Government Areas expected to experience flooding are Yala, Etung, Odukpani, Ogoja, Akpabuyo and Biase. 

In a press release dated 29th August, 2023, the commissioner explained that going by the announcement made by the Cameroon government to release water from the legdo dam, there is an increased risk of flooding in the aforementioned LGAs of the state. 

 She urged residents in these LGAs to take necessary precautions and stay alert during this period, while assuring them of the state government's commitment to preventing, mitigating and proffering solution to ensure that the release does not impact negative affect on the aforementioned.


It reads:" The state Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs envisaged this release of excess water from Legdo dam, taken note of the likely impact and considered in the preparation for mitigation and response to the 2023 flood alert. We want to assure Cross Riverians that the state government is committed to the prevention, mitigation and profferring solution to ensure that the release does not probably cause negative impacts to the aforementioned LGA."


The commissioner, while advising residents to comply with instructions from relevant authorities and cooperate with humanitarian organizations to minimize the impact of the impending flooding, called for collaboration with critical stakeholders, community leaders, traditional rulers, religious groups, Non governmental organisations, the media and well meaning Cross Riverians to ensure the safety and well-being of all.





Recall that few days ago, the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA and the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs sent out a release alerting Cross River and other states of imminent severe weather and flood due to the announcement by the Cameron government to release the legdo dam. The release of water from the dam would lead to adverse impact on communities, including damage to infrastructure, displacement of residents, and loss of property.
