Wives of Council Chairmen visit C'River Commissioner For Women Affairs, charged to Work Closely With The Office Of First Lady of The State

The Cross River River State Honourable Commissioner for Women Affairs recently received in audience wives of the newly elected Chairmen of the Local Government Areas, at the Ministry of Women Affairs, Calabar.


The representative of the Chairpersons, Mrs. Ewhe and Chairperson of Obudu LGC, Angela Eraye, gratified the Commissioner, Management and Staff of the Ministry for the warmth reception, stating that, the reason for the visit was to familiarize themselves with the Commissioner and the Ministry. Owing with fact that the Ministry is well positioned to assist and guide them achieve their goals and objectives as Chairpersons of Council. They pledged their continuous support and readiness to work with the Ministry.


In response, the Commissioner welcomed them for their timely visit, applauding them for being in the right place. She advised them to work closely with the Women Development Officers (WDOs), the female Appointees and Women generally in their various LGA's to initiate programs/projects that will impact on the lives of Women and Children to better their lot.


She further charged them to work closely with our amiable Mother of the State Her Excellency, Dr Mrs Linda Ayade to  complement her giant stride for Women in the State through Elective & appointive positions in Government.


She informed them of the newly created office S.A Women Affairs, North, Central and South appealing to them to work closely with the Office.


The Commissioner, enjoined them to also serve as watchdogs in their LGAs, especially on the issues of Gender Based Violence, Child Abuse, Rape, Female Genital Mutilation, Early Child Marriage and report the cases to the Ministry assuring them that the Culprits will be handed over to the appropriate authorities for prosecution.


She further enlightened, that a help Desk on Gender Based Violence Response will be set up in all Local Governments to facilitate the reduction or eradication of these   practices and this will be supervised by them.


The Chairpersons were also educated on the rights of Women, Child Rights act & Gender Policy passed by the State and they should also educate the Women on this in their Local Governments.


Responding in her vote of thanks, the representative of the Chairpersons thanked the Commissioner once again for the warm reception and for her words of advice to them and promised that they will heed to her advise.


The Commissioner, pour encomium to the Digital Governor His Excellency Sir. Sen. Prof  Ben Ayade for being Gender Sensitive  and friendly as evidenced in over 100 Women elected and appointed into various offices.


The visit had in attendance the Director of Administration, Director of Accounts,  Directors of Women Affairs and Child Development,  SA Women Affairs to the Governor (South) Mrs Gift Oqua.
