Democracy Day: 'Celebrate With Your Nose Masks' Bassey Tom urges Nigerians

The Executive Chairman of Obubra Local Government Area in Cross River State, Hon Dr Bassey Agara Tom has asked Cross Riverians and indeed Nigerians to follow the NCDC guidelines in marking this year's Democracy Day celebration.

The Obubra LG Boss said this in his Democracy Message tittled' A CONGRATULATORY MESSAGE TO PRESIDENT MUHAMMADU BUHARI AND GOVERNOR BEN AYADE ON THE OCCASION OF DEMOCRACY DAY CELEBRATION' during which he maintained that only the living celebrates and therefore advised Nigerians to wear their nose masks and observe other directives from the NCDC to ensure a COVID 19 free society.
The message reads

'It is a simple fact historically that Nigeria as a country has passed through turbulent times over the years since the achievement of independence in 1960 and later inception of democracy in 1993 and 1999 respectively. Inspite of this turbulence, the country is still united in purpose against prophecies of disintegration. But for democracy which has given us freedom to act though within the ambit of the constitution, this unity would have been elusive. Democracy is freedom, inclusion and respect for humanity and social coexistence, its sustainace must therefore not be negotiable.

This year's democracy is however very symbolic in that it is the first time in history that we are celebrating in June 12th according to the president's declaration of June 12th as the new democracy day in 2019, considering the stalled election of June 12th, 1993. It is also symbolic albeit unfortunate because we are today marking the day amidst the destructive novel Corona Virus also called COVID-19, which is ravaging the world and threatening the economy of our dear country. I am certain that God will continue to keep us united as one indivisible entity to always surmount challenges. Because we subdued other national threats such as Boko Haram, militancy, herdsmen annihilation etc, we shall also subdue this COVID-19 pandemic in our country.

I congratulate our dear president, Muhamadu Buhari and our digital governor, sir Ben Ayade on this auspicious day, I pray God to grant them the moral balance and intellectual capacity to take the people of Nigeria and Cross River State to Eldorado. I also heartily and very sincerely congratulate the entire people of Nigeria and Cross Riverians on this symbolic democracy day celebration. I urge everyone to continue to observe the NCDC principles of nose masking, personal hygiene, regular washing of hands with running water and soap, social distancing and reporting any suspected case to the NCDC and the Government for easy eradication of the pandemic, let's take responsibility that we may not rip the fabric of our day country apart.

I want to also use this opportunity to very specially congratulate the digital governor of Cross River State for his brilliance capacity to always set the pace in governance. As you continue to devise more intelligent measures to keep the state free of COVID-19, so shall we continue to pray, support and consolidate your efforts to maintain Cross River's nomenclature as the People's paradise. To my dear Obubra people, I congratulate you on this special day and wish you a very unique celebration.
